Most kittens are taken to their veterinarian for initial vaccinations. Some owners believe that this will adequately protect their pet for the rest of its life. Unfortunately, the immunity produced by vaccines weakens over time and your cat becomes susceptible to disease again. Once a viral disease infects your cat it is often difficult or impossible to treat effectively. Disability or death can result. The diseases listed below can all be avoided when regularly vaccinated with these common feline vaccinations:

FELV / FIV Test (Feline Leukemia / Feline Immunodeficiency Virus Test): Vaccinating a cat that already has FeLV will not cure the desease. Knowing your cat is infected will also allow you to provide better care for your cat and help prevent the spread of the disease to other cats.

Rabies: A fatal viral disease affecting the central nervous system of all mammals, including humans. It commonly is spread by contact with saliva from an infected animal, through bite wounds or though a break in the skin. Rabies has no cure and it is always fatal once symptoms appear.

FeLV (Feline Leukemia): is responsible for a number of fatal conditions not strictly classified as leukemia. Among them are various forms of cancer and malignancy; the virus suppresses the immune system and leaves cats susceptible to other infectious diseases. Typically, FeLV is spread when the saliva of an infected cat comes in contact with another cat. This can happen when cats groom each other, share food & water bowls, and through bite wounds.

FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis): is caused by a virus, and cats showing signs of the infection rarely survive. No treatment exists for cats infected with FIP. A cat with FIP may have an enlarged abdomen as a result of fluid build-up. Others may have signs of fever, weight loss, loss of coordination and possibly eye lesions. FIP is the second most deadly viral disease for cats and is spread by licking or nose-to-nose contact between cats.

FVRCP – FVRCP includes Panleukopenia (Feline Distemper), Rhinotracheites, Calicivirus, and Chlamydiosis. These common infectious diseases are preventable with regular vaccinations that stimulate your cat’s immune system, enabling him / her to fight off infection. Some symptoms you will find with these diseases include vomiting, diarrhea, discharge from the eyes and nose, sneezing, coughing, and fever.
